The change formula comes from organizational development and provides an intuitive explanation of how change can be achieved. Since your work often involves initiating transformation processes on a small or large scale\u2014whether in a neighborhood, school, city, or community to promote sustainability\u2014this formula can be highly applicable to sustainability projects as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to fill out the Canvas:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The formula is borrowed from physics and states that...<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Change energy must be greater than (>) resistance energy<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

...in order for change to occur. Inertia and friction always stand in the way of transformation. The more complex (or massive) the issue, the stronger the opposing force. Change energy, in turn, is determined as follows:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Change energy = (Dissatisfaction \u00d7 Vision \u00d7 First Steps) raised to the power of Kairos<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Only when dissatisfaction with the current state\u2014and thus awareness of a problem\u2014is high enough, and at the same time, an attractive vision (desired state) provides motivation to move forward, will action be taken: starting, engaging, and taking the first steps. However, this classic three-step process is not automatic: the timing must also be right. Therefore, it is essential to examine the context and conditions\u2014the Kairos\u2014and ask: Where, in what situation, and with whom can the opportunity be seized? The term Kairos (from ancient Greek: \"opportune moment\") refers to timing and framing. Sometimes, society, politics, or the general climate may not yet be ready for a particular cause or product. That is why it is crucial to sense (or inquire about) the right moment, place, and people to engage with\u2014and to consider how you might actively contribute to opening this window of opportunity. In the sustainability movement, the time has seemed especially ripe since Fridays for Future. But what specific factors might influence the timing for your project?<\/p>\n\n\n\n
